Because of this, there have been some changes in the ideas about building back links, or inbound links, to your blogs and websites. Let's begin by pointing out a few misconceptions:
Misconception 1 - it doesn't matter who they're from, just get as many back links as you can
This is one of those changes made by Google that was referenced above. This misconception is entirely false. In fact, if you were to go about your link building in this willy-nilly way, you'd see little or no results. In fact, you'd probably see yourself penalized.
The proper way to build links is through a long and steady, and organic, process. You want quality links from other websites and blogs that are related in some way to yours.
Misconception 2 - All your back links must be from websites with a higher PR than yours
Again, this is not only false, but can actually hurts you if your link profile is this way. Why? Because again, the word for link building is: organic. No one is going to have all PR5 and above back links to a website that has a PR of 0. It just doesn't make sense, and furthermore, it looks fake.
If you're really building a naturally progressing link profile, then you should have links pointing to your website from all sorts of websites with all sorts of page ranks and traffic numbers. This is fluid and natural and approved by Google.
Misconception 3 - PR or Page Rank matters
No, it really doesn't. PR is nothing more than a generic ranking system that in no way influences where you appear in organic searches.
Yes, having a higher PR does add some prestige and authority to your website, but it won't help you rank better in a search results page.
Now, having considered these misconceptions, let's take a look at the proper way to build a back link profile. It's actually quite simple.
As we mentioned above, you want your back link profile to look natural. And since there are less websites in each PR level as you go up, it's natural that the more back links you create, the more lower-level page ranks you'll have linking to you.
There's no exact formula, but think of it like this: for every PR 5 site, you might have 2 PR 4, 4 PR 3, 8 PR 2, 16 PR 1 and 30 or so PR0 websites connecting to yours. Again, this is a non-specific example, but it shows you how a natural link profile should look. In fact, if your numbers differ a bit, and look a little less organized than the example, so much the better.
The second thing you want to consider is that it's okay if not every link is a dofollow link. You're going to get some nofollow links from blogs, forums, and other websites. It's natural. Although these don't do much for your Google link reputation, they do allow users the opportunity to find you.
Another key point to a good link profile is that the other websites that link to you, and to whom you link, are related in some way to you. We mentioned this before, but we'll expand on it here. The simple fact is, the more websites that relate to you link to you, the more authority yours will possess in the eyes of the search engines. The more authority you have in the eyes of your "peers" the more weight your website will be given.
Finally, one quick note on page rank. While it was stated above that PR does not help your search results performance, it is a good idea to drive your PR up as much as you can. This lends you more authority and will make it easier for you to attain higher quality links. The best way to drive your PR up is to acquire back links from other websites whose PR is at least 2 above yours. This can be a tough road to hoe at first, but well worth it in the long run.
As stated, the principles of creating back links are simple enough. It's in the application of these principles where most people have difficulty. It is so worth it, however, to struggle with scratching your way up the link ladder. In the long run, aside from SEO and quality content, a well-formed and maintained link profile is one of the best things you'll ever do for the success of your websites.
